Charles A. Schieren expresses his admiration of President Roosevelt and congratulates him on succeeding to the presidency. Schieren was disappointed at the last National Republican Convention because he wanted Roosevelt to serve another term as governor of New York. However, with hindsight, he realizes Roosevelt was destined for a larger position in this terrible time due to President McKinley’s assassination.

Letter from John Willis to Theodore Roosevelt

John Willis has been scouting a large bear that he thought President Roosevelt might be able to hunt. Upon returning to town, he heard of the news of Roosevelt’s succession to the presidency. Willis is sad that the presidency came to Roosevelt under such difficult circumstances. He understands that Roosevelt can no longer make a trip west. Willis is doing well in Montana and has a ranch with a “good start of cattle.”
