A Christmas sermon

A Christmas sermon

Puck stands on a stage speaking to wealthy philanthropists. From left: an empty seat “reserved for Russell Sage,” Mrs. Leland Stanford, Miss [Helen Miller?] Gould, John D Rockefeller Jr., Andrew Carnegie, Vanderbilt [William K., by resemblance], [and] J. P. Morgan.” Puck is displaying a “Plan for model tenement” and pointing to a view of current tenement housing conditions projected on a magic-lantern screen on the stage. In the “Christmas sermon,” Puck is entreating that when these generous millionaires are performing their philanthropy, they not only endow schools and libraries, which benefit “those that already have much,” but also “give something to those who have less than nothing.”

Caring for the state’s wards

Caring for the state’s wards

The article discusses how Minnesota’s public school in Owatonna houses and provides for children from poverty-stricken families or those lacking sufficient support. While it is a necessary institution, it is frequently overcrowded and has a waiting list. Cyrus Townsend Brady recently commented on the benefits of the state providing pensions for widows with dependents instead of removing their children to an institution. Such a program would not cost more than the school’s current expenditures. Additionally, forming a state commission to investigate poverty would aid the initiative.

Holy trinity

Holy trinity

A priest stands at the pulpit in a cathedral, preaching from the “Holy Ledger.” Beneath his feet is a cut-away of an area labeled “Rentals” and revealing bags of money above the phrase, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” The bottom half of the image shows the squalor of poor families living in sections of the city identified as “Filth Lane, Tuberculosis Alley, Bacteria Court, Thug Corner, Squalor Street, [and] Fire Trap.”
