Letter from Kentarō Kaneko to Theodore Roosevelt

Kentarō Kaneko sends two post cards from Japan featuring President Roosevelt. Roosevelt gave him the picture last year at Oyster Bay. Everyone thought it was the best photo available. Kaneko is amazed it has been a year since he left America and reminisces on his times visiting Roosevelt in Oyster Bay. Kaneko is curious if Roosevelt ever received the letter which explains the gifts sent to Roosevelt by Emperor Meiji.

“Old Man” Youve Got A Slim Chance

Postcard featuring a political cartoon of President Roosevelt, William Jennings Bryan, and William H. Taft playing baseball. The postcard shows Roosevelt, the catcher, and Taft, the pitcher, teaming up against Bryan, the batter. The postcard references Bryan’s failed attempts at becoming president, and foresees another loss in the 1908 election. A handwritten note on the reverse compares Sylvester Rucker’s run for mayor to that of Bryan.

Postcard to Ellis Ely

In care of Noah Ely, love and best wishes are sent to Ellis Ely of Wakarusa, Indiana. The postcard includes a scene with the brightly-clad Cracker Jack Bears standing on the front steps of the White House. One shakes the hand of President Theodore Roosevelt. The other bear climbs one of the columns. Number seven in a series of sixteen cards that were sent for free to anyone who mailed in ten sides from Cracker Jack boxes or ten cents in “silver or stamps.”

Deserves a second term

Postcard with images of George Washington, U. S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and William H. Taft. Captions under each image read, (Washington) “declined a third term,” (Grant) was “denied a third term,” (Roosevelt) “demands a third term what Washington refused and Grant could not get,” and (Taft) “deserves a second term.” Each side also features a Roosevelt quotation praising Taft.

Chester Edwards’ brother writes that he had a good weekend with fifteen dollars on Saturday and Sunday. He reminds Chester to get the work done, and wonders if he remembers three years ago today. The postcard depicts Theodore Roosevelt’s coat of arms, and names his ancestors Klaas Martensezen Van Roosevelt and Jannetje Samuels-Thomas, who emigrated from Holland to New Amsterdam in 1649.

Postcard from N. Manchester to John Birch

N. Manchester gives advice to John Birch to beware of increasing his “avoir du pois.” He asks that Birch excuse his writing because it was conducted in the dark. The address of Birch is scribbled out with ink of a different color. Manchester writes this message on a postcard with five images of Theodore Roosevelt on the front with the title “Wise Words of Theodore Roosevelt” accompanied with quotes under each image.
