Cartoon shows bears running amok in Colorado. Senator Patterson tells the tales to President Roosevelt as he cleans his gun. Caption: Senator Patterson has told Mr. Roosevelt that the northern part of Colorado is fairly overrun by bears; that bears prevail everywhere in large and devastating numbers; they prowl about with the utmost impudence, drinking whisky, eating up rabbits and chickens, even slipping down goats and hogs in the wild exuberance of dissipation. They are at once the terror and the affliction of the entire region. They go where they please, do what fancy prompts and otherwise appall the very oldest citizens. Northern Colorado is simply crying out for Mr. Roosevelt quite as loudly as Mr. Roosevelt is crying out for bears. – The Washington Post

Letter from A. M. Stevenson to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from A. M. Stevenson to Theodore Roosevelt

A. M. Stevenson expresses concern that the Republican party and the administration of President Roosevelt are losing ground because of the atrocities in the Philippines that have been published in the daily papers. Stevenson fears that the party will lose the fall elections if the Republicans in Congress keep letting the Democrats have their way on this issue. He wants the Republicans to fight back and defend the American military’s actions in the Philippines. He then reminds Roosevelt of the Sand Creek Indian massacre, in which women and children were killed, and notes that Senator Teller (D-CO) was one of the principal backers of Colonel John Chivington, who led the Colorado militia in that fight.

Letter from William Michael Byrne to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from William Michael Byrne to Theodore Roosevelt

William Michael Byrne would like a meeting with President Roosevelt to discuss Philippine affairs and the Committee on the Philippines in order to better shape a speech he is scheduled to deliver in New York. Byrne argues that allegations by Colorado Senator Thomas M. Patterson of anti-Catholic attitudes by the United States government in the Philippines were unfounded.
