Goddard notes that while this might not be true, he opposes the appointment and would like Roosevelt to consult him for the Republican Party opinion on appointments.

President Roosevelt enjoyed hearing from New York Supreme Court Justice Spring, and comments that he has been concerned with attacks against various New York politicians. While the situation in Erie County is bad, it is not the only place in the state where the situation is not good. He also agrees with Spring’s opinion about appointing a new justice on the Supreme Court.

President Roosevelt gives his approval for F. Norton Goddard to give a letter of introduction to his Armenian friend. Until Roosevelt received Goddard’s letter he had not thought of Charles H. Murray as postmaster. Roosevelt will gladly talk over the New York City appointments with Goddard.

Representative Fassett will give an interview condemning any attempts to start a row between President Roosevelt and New York Governor Charles Evans Hughes. Fassett has spoken with the committeemen in his office and while Hughes would be their first choice for president should Roosevelt choose not to run for a second elected term, they think he lacks Roosevelt’s “graces of character” and do not consider him as trustworthy.

Charles William Anderson reports on several members of the New York Republican State Committee’s opinions of President Roosevelt, Governor Charles Evans Hughes, and Secretary of War William H. Taft. The majority of the members have indicated that they would support Hughes’s run for president over Taft’s should Roosevelt not seek renomination, although Roosevelt would be their first choice. Anderson has heard some rumors among financial circles about an unnamed fourth potential candidate, but has not seen any support for him among the actual State Committee members.

Hamilton Fish recommends Nelson W. Aldrich for appointment as chairman of the National Republican Committee. The New York State Convention was harmonious, with strong delegate support going to Thomas Collier Platt. Fish believes that the decision made involving Leslie M. Shaw, Charles H. Murray, and Mr. Bliss was “a very wise one.”

James Bronson Reynolds is concerned whether or not President Roosevelt will be able to carry New York in the fall. He advises addressing the lack of office space for letter carriers in the New York Post Office. Reynolds offers to share the findings of his upcoming visit to Chisinau (Kishinev), Russia, and Romania where he will look into the condition of Romanian Jews.
