At a recent dedication of a promontory on the rim of the Grand Canyon to Theodore Roosevelt, Secretary of the Interior Bruce E. Babbitt spoke on the impact Roosevelt had in preserving the Grant Canyon, designating it a Game Preserve in 1906, and a National Monument in 1908.

Program for dedication of Theodore Roosevelt memorial plaque

Program to commemorate the dedication of a Theodore Roosevelt memorial plaque in North Kaibab National Forest. The plaque, initially intended to be laid at the site of Uncle Jimmy Owens’ hunting cabin, was created in celebration of the centennial of the birth of Roosevelt and his role in the conservation efforts for the Grand Canyon.

President Roosevelt believes the continued support of Uncle Remus’s magazine is the memorial Joel Chandler Harris would have wanted most. However, the memorial Mayor Joyner proposes also seems appropriate. While he cannot take an active role in raising such a memorial, Roosevelt will accept an honorary vice presidency on the memorial committee if offered.
