Ray H. Mattison thanks Roy P. Johnson for his hard work gathering and sending him research materials regarding the authenticity of Theodore Roosevelt’s Maltese Cross cabin. The information Mattison has gathered from interviewing old timers backs the authenticity of the cabin thus far, although he still has more people to interview. Mattison believes Hermann Hagedorn is incorrect in saying that Roosevelt went to Red River country in Nebraska in 1882, because there is Red River in Nebraska. He notes a paragraph in Roosevelt’s 1920 autobiography in which the President talks about his first trip to Fargo, North Dakota in 1883, not 1882.

Stacy A. Cordery examines the “shadows and sunshine” of Theodore Roosevelt’s time in Boston while an undergraduate student at Harvard College. Cordery identifies the shadows as the death of Roosevelt’s father, his disenchantment with his natural science major, and his failed courtship of Edith Kermit Carow. The countering sunshine was provided by Roosevelt’s successful pursuit of Alice Hathaway Lee. Cordery looks at each of these episodes, especially the courtship of Carow and Lee, and she argues that these episodes were pivotal to Roosevelt’s life and career.
Four photographs appear in the text, including two of Roosevelt with Lee.
Assemblyman Roosevelt was glad to hear from H. D. Minot and expects to see him at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, this summer. Roosevelt intends to call his daughter Alice by the name Lee as, after the death of his wife Alice Lee Roosevelt, he could not have another, “not even her own child, bear her name.”

He describes the men in the photograph for Corinne Roosevelt; they include G. Gorham Peters, Charles G. Washburn, and Charles Ware. Roosevelt’s horse is in “beautiful trim” if a bit shaggy looking. Roosevelt has been riding often to Chestnut Hill and visited Jamaica Plain with Christopher Minot Weld.

Roosevelt relates he is working and socializing “a good deal.” He also expresses dismay about being asked to resign from the Sunday school class he had for three years because he declined to join the Episcopal Church.
