The Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard: A Sixtieth-Anniversary Report

Wallace Finley Dailey describes the changes and additions to the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University since his last report in 1994. Dailey notes the repair and restoration of thousands of pamphlets, the addition of manuscripts from Roosevelt family members, and the addition of books and articles whose authors made use of the collection in writing their works. Dailey also describes the process of moving the collection’s guides online, and he highlights the various exhibits mounted by Harvard Library using material from the collection. He closes the report by noting that the collection received Theodore Roosevelt’s Pigskin Library, and that it served as the centerpiece of an exhibit.

A photograph of the Pigskin Library appears on the first page of the report, and a text box with a quote from Roosevelt about reading appears at its end.

John A. Gable discusses the discovery of three photographs that show Theodore Roosevelt and his cousin Franklin D. Roosevelt together. Gable also provides context for the photographs, discovered by the author Geoffrey C. Ward, in detailing the libel case brought against Theodore Roosevelt by William Barnes. The three photographs show the two Roosevelts on their way to court in Syracuse, New York, on May 4, 1915. Two of the photographs appear in the article. The photograph on the back cover of this issue, and referenced in the article, shows Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt onboard a ship with Theodore Roosevelt upon his return to the United States from his African safari in 1910.

Theodore Roosevelt in Cartoon Art: Debut, 1883-1884

Theodore Roosevelt in Cartoon Art: Debut, 1883-1884

Roger A. Fischer examines the emergence of Theodore Roosevelt as a subject for political cartoonists in the years 1883-1884. Fischer highlights Roosevelt’s battles with the Tammany Hall political machine in New York City and his role at the 1884 Republican National Convention. Fischer argues that Roosevelt received a lot of attention because he was from New York City where the major magazines of the time had their offices.

The article features seven cartoons depicting Roosevelt and others, and it also includes a listing of the officers of the Theodore Roosevelt Association along with the members of its executive committee.
