This edition of the “News and Notes” section features the announcement of a “Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize” to be awarded annually by the New York Council of the Navy League. The announcement discusses the background of the award, who will serve as judges, and how to apply. The section also covers five speaking engagements undertaken by John A. Gable, Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), during the fall of 1984. Brief notes on a variety of ceremonies, celebrations, a children’s play, and a traveling exhibit about Roosevelt complete the section.

The “News and Notes” column acknowledges the authors who contributed to this issue of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal and promotes the work of various scholars who have written books on Theodore Roosevelt related topics. It lists the winners of Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) sponsored awards and contests and notes the work, achievements, and passing of members of the TRA. It highlights an Independence Day celebration held in Oyster Bay, New York at the bandstand rebuilt by the TRA.

John A. Gable opens this edition of the “News and Notes” column by quoting extensively from an article in Psychohistory Review by Kathleen Dalton that addresses why Theodore Roosevelt was so popular with the American people. He talks about Roosevelt related gatherings in Buffalo, New York, Tampa, Florida, and Harvard University, and he notes the winner of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Essay Contest at Long Island University. Gable notes one of his recent speaking engagements and closes with a further endorsement of Frederick W. Marks’s study of Roosevelt’s diplomacy, Velvet on Iron.

Article that announces the annual meeting for 1978 of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection Committee which oversees the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University. The article lists the members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association that serve on the committee, provides an update on the additions and contributions made to the collection, and lists the names of the individuals and organizations that made the donations. The article also says that a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt painted by George Burroughs Torrey at the White House had been donated to Harvard by Dr. Adelbert Ames. Annual Report: The Work of the Theodore Roosevelt Association in 1975

P. James Roosevelt and John A. Gable, President and Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), provide a detailed accounting of the TRA’s outreach and education activities for 1975. Many of these initiatives are covered in more detail in individual articles in this issue of the Journal. The longest portion of the Report covers the plan to undertake an urban renewal effort in the neighborhood of the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site on East Twentieth Street in New York City. The planting of trees, painting of buildings, use of brick pavers and other measures are hoped to revitalize the neighborhood and increase visitation to the site.

The Annual Report also features three photographs from the TRA’s Annual Meeting and Dinner as well as two views of the sculpture bust of Theodore Roosevelt created by Gleb Derujinsky, a copy of which was donated to the city of Oyster Bay, New York by the TRA in October 1975.

James Roosevelt, President of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), provides a detailed look at the activities of the TRA during 1974, noting the significant financial donations the TRA made to various entities such as the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, the Youngs Memorial Cemetery in Oyster Bay, New York where Theodore Roosevelt is buried, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. He highlights the hiring of John A. Gable to serve as the Executive Director of the TRA. Several of the initiatives noted here are described in some detail in brief notices in the rest of the issue. This piece also includes a listing of the leadership of the TRA.
