On behalf of Theodore Roosevelt, his secretary acknowledges John Nayler’s letter. Roosevelt knows no one who would like to purchase the letters about which Nayler inquired, though J. Pierpont Morgan may be interested.

Theodore Roosevelt’s secretary thanks Andrew Jackson for his kindness in enclosing the letter from President Andrew Jackson to his wife, Rachel. Unfortunately, Roosevelt cannot use the letter, as he is not collecting such material. Roosevelt’s secretary advises Jackson not to send such valuable letters by mail in the future, as they could become lost.

The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) announces that this issue features the publication of a newly discovered letter from Theodore Roosevelt to George Otto Trevelyan from the collection of Gregory A. Wynn, and it also states that its annual meeting for 2009 will be held in Tampa, Florida, with Stacey A. Cordery and Douglas Brinkley as featured speakers. The section includes a text box listing the executive leadership of the TRA, along with those responsible for assembling its journal, and guidelines for submitting manuscripts.

Gregory A. Wynn discusses the origins of his hobby of collecting items related to Theodore Roosevelt, and he uses this as an introduction to examine a letter from Theodore Roosevelt to George Otto Trevelyan which had not been previously known or published. Wynn highlights the sensitive nature of the letter’s contents as it reveals Roosevelt’s thoughts and actions during a number of diplomatic crises during his presidency. Wynn also notes how the Trevelyan letter was shared with and was part of Roosevelt’s correspondence with his friend David Gray. Wynn asserts that the letters provide a “revealing snapshot of presidential statecraft.”
A postcard and a dinner program from Wynn’s collection appear in the article along with a photograph of Roosevelt with Trevelyan and his son George Macaulay Trevelyan.
