President Roosevelt regrets that he cannot attend a dinner in honor of visiting Professor Rudolf Leonhard as Nicholas Murray Butler suggests, but can arrange for a dinner later. Roosevelt also says that the views of Thomas A. Painter, a former classmate of Butler’s, on financial trusts is in line with his own.

President Roosevelt asks German Ambassador Hermann Speck von Sternburg if it would be agreeable to have dinner with Columbia University’s Kaiser Wilhelm Professor Rudolf Leonhard and his wife, when Sternburg is well. Roosevelt also asks, personally and confidentially, what Sternburg knows about Minister to the Netherlands David Jayne Hill and his wife, Juliet Lewis Packer Hill.

German Ambassador Sternburg accepts President Roosevelt’s invitation to dine at the White House with Columbia University’s Kaiser Wilhelm Professor, Rudolf Leonhard, and his wife. Sternburg knew David Jayne Hill and his wife when Hill was Assistant Secretary of State in the McKinley administration, and found him to be a gentleman and an authority in international law.

Columbia University President Nicholas Murray Butler is delighted that President Roosevelt might be able to receive the visiting Kaiser Wilhelm Professor Rudolf Leonhard and his wife at the White House. Butler has enclosed a letter with additional details and a list of committee members for the event. Butler notes that the the event should be on a similar scale with what is done in Germany, and that the date is flexible based on Roosevelt’s schedule.

Carpenter writes to Nicholas Murray Butler, President of Columbia University, on behalf of an academic committee which is organizing an honorary dinner for Rudolf Leonhard, the visiting Kaiser Wilhelm Professor. John William Burgess, visiting Roosevelt Professor at the University of Berlin, received a warm welcome from German Emperor William II the previous year, so Carpenter and the committee hope that Butler will invite President Roosevelt to the dinner in the hopes of fostering greater academic exchange and cooperation between the two nations.

Nicholas Murray Butler, President of Columbia University, writes to ask President Roosevelt if he will invite visiting Kaiser Wilhelm Professor Rudolf Leonhard and his wife, Klara Wilhelmina Goll Leonhard, to dinner at the White House. Butler feels this is an important gesture for the academic cooperation between the two countries, particularly given the warm reception of American academics in Germany. If Roosevelt would invite the Leonhards to a dinner he is having with German Ambassador Hermann Speck von Sternburg, Murray is confident that German Emperor William II would appreciate the gesture.
