Michael Patrick Cullinane argues that the publication of Heather Cole’s Theodore Roosevelt: A Descriptive Bibliography will enhance the understanding and appreciation of Theodore Roosevelt as an author and intellectual which is too often overshadowed by the hunter, soldier, and man of action. Cullinane explores the roots of the bibliography stretching back to the 1920s, and he praises Cole for both her work in compiling the bibliography and for paying attention to its look with the inclusion of color illustrations and manuscript pages. The front and back covers of the bibliography and three examples of its illustrations supplement the review.

News and notes

This edition of “News and Notes” focuses on the restoration and conservation of two Theodore Roosevelt memorials: an equestrian statue of Roosevelt as a Rough Rider located in Portland, Oregon, and a conservation themed memorial in Tenafly, New Jersey. Separate articles provide background for each memorial, detailing their donors, sculptors, and the reasons why they are in need of restoration. The section also highlights the Theodore Roosevelt Association’s (TRA) annual teddy bear drive, a controversy involving a Roosevelt related question on a quiz show, and the TRA’s goal to have 2,000 members in the year 2000. Three photographs supplement the text.

The cradle of conservation: Theodore Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch, an icon of American’s national identity

The cradle of conservation: Theodore Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch, an icon of American’s national identity

Lowell E. Baier describes the importance of Theodore Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch to the formation of Roosevelt’s environmental awareness, and subsequently to the emergence of the nation’s conservation movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Baier provides a brief history of the conservation movement in the United States before Roosevelt’s emergence as its leader, and he argues that the conservation effort stemmed in part from the nation’s desire to preserve parts of its frontier past. Baier quotes Roosevelt biographer Edmund Morris in emphasizing the importance of the Elkhorn to Roosevelt’s environmental beliefs, and he highlights efforts to secure the protection of lands directly across the Little Missouri River from the Elkhorn ranch house.

A photograph of Roosevelt with two of his ranch hands and three historic photographs of the Elkhorn Ranch buildings populate the essay along with two contemporary color photographs of the site. The essay also features illustrations of Roosevelt’s cattle brands, sketches of the Elkhorn ranch buildings by Frederic Remington, and a large map showing the various units of Theodore Roosevelt National Park and surrounding lands.

Seven books, including two memoirs, are examined in six review essays in this edition of the “Book Notes” section. Michael L. Manson reviews two books on Theodore Roosevelt’s 1914 scientific expedition to Brazil; one penned by Roosevelt and the other by Joseph R. Ornig. Manson praises the forewords to both books written by Tweed Roosevelt, and he finds Ornig’s book provides a detailed look at the expedition and the cast of characters besides Roosevelt who made it successful. Stacy A. Cordery notes that journalist Joseph Alsop’s memoirs deal mostly with the major events and figures of the mid to late twentieth century, and she reveals Alsop’s opinions of various senators, presidents, and generals.

Richard P. Harmon faults Peter Collier’s The Roosevelts: An American Saga for focusing too much on the private lives of the two Roosevelt families, and he says that many of Collier’s assertions are not backed by evidence and that the book relies too much on a psychohistory approach. James Summerville asserts that H. Paul Jeffers’s look at Roosevelt’s tenure as Police Commissioner of New York City, Commissioner Roosevelt, disappoints and that readers should turn to Jay S. Berman’s study or to coverage of this period of Roosevelt’s career in biographies. John A. Gable provides a positive and short review of a short book, William H. Harbaugh’s fifty page history of Pine Knot, which Gable says is written with “charm and style.” Robert D. Dalziel, President of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), reviews the memoirs of Hamilton Fish, a winner of the TRA’s Distinguished Service Medal. Dalziel says that Fish’s opinions are straightforward and blunt like their author.

Two photographs appear in the section: one shows three members of the Rio Roosevelt Expedition of 1992 and the other dignitaries of the Dutch government at the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands.

“Theodore Roosevelt, Where Are You Now That We Need You?”

“Theodore Roosevelt, Where Are You Now That We Need You?”

Lee Cullum challenges the conclusions of historian Richard Hofstadter who downplayed the achievements and intellect of Theodore Roosevelt. Cullum claims that Roosevelt was superior to Woodrow Wilson in his handling of diplomacy and big business, and she asserts that Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy had a lot in common.

An illustration of Roosevelt in a dynamic speaking pose and a listing of the officers and members of the executive committee of the Theodore Roosevelt Association appear in the article.
