TRA annual dinner and cruise onboard USS Theodore Roosevelt June 18-19, 2017

Thirty-two page photo album of sixty-eight color photographs depicting a dinner for members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in San Diego, California, on June 18, 2017, and the “Friends and Family Day Cruise” of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt on June 19, 2017. The album features many photographs of crew members of the ship, including several of the commanding officer, Craig A. Clapperton, members and officers of the TRA, along with guests and family members. The album also features photographs of the flight deck, bridge, and commanding officer’s quarters on the carrier.

The album opens with a brief biography of the photographer Elise Prudhomme.

Boston 2015: A very memorable TRA annual meeting

William N. Tilchin gives a report on the 2015 annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in Boston, Massachusetts. Tilchin lists the planners of the meeting, and he dwells on the events held at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University and at the Algonquin Club in Boston. Tilchin describes the major events of the weekend, including the conferring of the TRA Boston Police Awards, the Saturday symposium, and the annual dinner. Tilchin highlights the symposium speakers and their topics as well as the winners of TRA awards presented at the dinner.

Thirteen photographs of some of the speakers, guests, and dignitaries at the meeting populate the report along with two other images from the events, and two menus from the Algonquin Club.

Philip J. Roosevelt and John A. Gable recount the life and work of P. James Roosevelt, the only Roosevelt family member to have been President of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA). They note his love of sailing and yacht racing, his devotion to his Christian faith and missionary work, and his assumption of many leadership roles in the TRA. Roosevelt and Gable also highlight his support of the Roosevelt family genealogical project and his leadership of Youngs Memorial Cemetery. Two photographs of P. James Roosevelt appear in the section.

Report on the 2011 annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in Medora and Dickinson, North Dakota. The report highlights the various venues for the meeting including Dickinson State University, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and Medora, and it notes the winners of three awards conferred by the TRA. Thirty-eight photographs comprise most of the report, including twenty-six of the various guests, dignitaries, and speakers as well as twelve photographs of the North Dakota Badlands.

Collection of thirty-two photographs from the 2008 annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in Oyster Bay, New York. Many of the photographs are close-ups of the various TRA leaders, speakers, guests or dignitaries at the assorted events.  Only two of the figures are identified in captions. Two pages of photographs are devoted to a parade in Oyster Bay; one page to the TRA’s annual dinner; one page to events at Sagamore Hill; and one page to ceremonies at Theodore Roosevelt’s grave at Youngs Memorial Cemetery.

In the steps of the Roosevelt brothers

Genna Rollins provides a detailed description of the tour undertaken by a group from the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in June 2007 to sites connected with the wartime service of Lieutenant Quentin Roosevelt and Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt. Rollins highlights the military cemeteries and memorials connected to the Roosevelt brothers, and she traces the group’s itinerary through France, highlighting material gained from the group’s tour leader. Rollins emphasizes the service of the Roosevelt brothers, noting Lieutenant Roosevelt’s brief tour as a combat pilot and Brigadier General Roosevelt’s steady leadership on Utah Beach on June 6, 1944. Rollins concludes her article with brief stories of other notable Americans who served in World War I.

Two illustrations and sixteen photographs populate the article, including eight photographs of sites and memorials connected to the Roosevelt brothers, and five depictions of the brothers.

Atlanta meeting a tremendous success

Harry N. Lembeck describes the events surrounding the 2006 annual meeting, symposium, and dinner of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in Atlanta, Georgia. Lembeck notes the meetings of the executive committee, Board of Trustees, and other committees, and he highlights Bulloch Hall, site of some of the events and childhood home of Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt’s mother. Lembeck gives a brief description of each of the four symposium presentations, and he provides coverage of the conferring of three TRA awards: the USS Theodore Roosevelt Junior Officer Award, the Bertha B. Rose Award, and the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal. Lembeck emphasizes the latter, noting the warm reception accorded the winner, Colonel George E. “Bud” Day.

TRA leadership developments

The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) updates its membership on changes in the leadership of the TRA. Norman Parsons will continue to serve as President until a replacement is found by a search committee and the positions of Treasurer and Secretary have also changed hands, and William N. Tilchin has been appointed as the editor of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal. The article notes that this issue of the journal is dedicated to Regina Louisa Haase Jeffries. A text box with the revised leadership team supplements the article.

The 77th Annual Meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association

Report on the 77th annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in and around Boston, Massachusetts in October, 1996. The report highlights the conferring of several awards sponsored by the TRA: the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal to author David McCullough; the Bertha B. Rose Award to Wallace Finley Dailey of Harvard; the Police Award for a member of the Boston, Massachusetts, Police Department; and the Junior Officer of the Year Award to a member of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. The report also details the annual elections of the TRA, including the selection of Lawrence H. Budner as the next president, and it notes that tours of Harvard, including the Theodore Roosevelt Collection, were given for those who attended. The report highlights the many years of service to the TRA of P. James Roosevelt and announces that a lecture series will be established in his name.

Seven of the nine pages of this edition of the “News and Notes” section deal with the meeting, dinner, ceremonies, and reports from the annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held onboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt on October 31, 1992. Highlights of the meeting include the presentation of the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal to the members of the Rio Roosevelt expedition team; the conferring of the TRA’s Bertha B. Rose Award to Paul Whitney Parcells; and the inauguration of the TRA Junior Officer Leadership Award for a member of the crew of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. The section includes TRA President Robert D. Dalziel’s annual report, and it highlights the donation of Pine Knot, Theodore Roosevelt’s rustic retreat in Virginia, to the TRA by Theodore Roosevelt IV. “News and Notes” also covers programs held at the Sagamore Hill and Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Sites, and it details the performance of the cast of “Phantom of the Opera” onboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

This edition of the “News and Notes” section begins with media coverage of the Rio Roosevelt Expedition 1992, including the reprinting of a New York Times article on the expedition and highlighting coverage on ABC television’s “Good Morning America” program. The section also details some of the many awards and honors bestowed by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) and its partners in 1992, including police awards in New York City and Boston; research grants from the American Museum of Natural History; the public speaking contest for the New York City public schools; and the awards given by the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands for essays in American history. “News and Notes” also features three obituaries of prominent figures in the TRA: Oliver R. Grace, Elisha Dyer, and William Davison Johnston. The latter two served as Presidents of the TRA, and this issue of the journal is dedicated to Johnston. The section closes with reflections on Theodore Roosevelt by three of his contemporaries, Van Wyck Brooks, Joseph Bucklin Bishop, and Hamlin Garland.

Eleven photographs illustrate the section: two of members of the Rio Roosevelt Expedition; five from the police awards in Boston and New York City; three of Dyer and Johnston; and one of the awards ceremony at the Roosevelt Study Center. There are two text boxes in the section: one seeks a financial sponsor for the TRA public speaking contest, and the other notes a change in the mailing address of the TRA.

The Theodore Roosevelt Association: Past Present and Future

Robert D. Dalziel speaks on the occasion of being elected 12th President of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA). He recalls the beginning of his interest in Theodore Roosevelt, as well as his involvement with the TRA and how the TRA has developed. The TRA has grown greatly and strengthened its ties with a number of Roosevelt-related sites, and Dalziel hopes to continue growing the membership of the TRA across the country. Other areas that Dalziel hopes to focus on include putting the TRA on a firmer financial footing and enhancing the scholarly reputation of the TRA.

Accompanying Dalziel’s speech is a brief list of recent recipients of the TRA’s Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal, and photographs of President George Bush interacting with members of the TRA at a lecture by David G. McCullough.

Six of the ten pages of this edition of the “News and Notes” column are devoted to the visit of a delegation from the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) to the Netherlands in October 1989. The TRA, for the first time, held its annual meeting and dinner outside of the United States. The column notes the group’s visit to various sites across the Netherlands, describes the activities of the Roosevelt Study Center, and discusses fundraising efforts to support the Center. The column also discusses efforts to increase the endowment for the TRA and to establish an endowment for the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University.

The column is illustrated with fifteen photographs from the TRA’s visit to the Netherlands and two more from the fundraising dinner held to support the endowment of the Roosevelt collection at Harvard.

This edition of the “News and Notes” column reports on the success of the 1988 Teddy Bear Drive sponsored by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) and the National Park Service, and it notes that President George Bush has placed a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt in the White House’s Cabinet Room. The column also covers the Lawrence J. Saunders Awards for essays in American history conferred by the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands, and Dayton Ritt, commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, reports on the aircraft carrier’s deployments in 1988. “News and Notes” closes with the announcement of a campaign to increase the endowment of the TRA to fund its own activities and to be able to support the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard and the Roosevelt Study Center.
