Working at Sagamore Hill

Courtney Lander Mongell reflects on her time as a student volunteer at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. Mongell discusses the work she did in preparing an inventory of Theodore Roosevelt’s library, and she notes that she, like Roosevelt, was fortunate to have supportive parents who instilled in her the value of hard work and athletics. Mongell says that she found inspiration from Roosevelt and from her work at Sagamore Hill after she suffered head injuries that led to the end of her athletic career. A photograph of elk antlers at Sagamore Hill illustrates the article.

Letter from Constantin von Sternberg to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Constantin von Sternberg to Theodore Roosevelt

Noted composer Constantin von Sternberg submits a memorial on “Music in American Civic Life,” including that of African Americans. While motivated in part by his gratitude to the nation that has “showered kindnesses past counting” upon him, von Sternberg’s admiration of President Roosevelt was also part of his inspiration. He may never have written the memorial were he not moved by Roosevelt’s wide array of interests and the possibility that Roosevelt might also include music among the topics in which he interests himself. von Sternberg would welcome the opportunity to meet Roosevelt to discuss the project.
