President Roosevelt discusses the election prospects in various states. In particular he discusses the conditions in Ohio and New York, where “underground forces” are working against William H. Taft. However, Roosevelt believes that they will pull through and win the election. He believes that Charles Evans Hughes will win his election in New York as well. Roosevelt is glad that Senator Lodge is going on the stump. Hughes, Lodge, and Senator Albert J. Beveridge are the speakers who are most in demand.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Whitelaw Reid

President Roosevelt informs Ambassador Reid that the National Civic Federation’s committee studying municipal ownership of utilities has largely finished their investigations in the United States and will be traveling to Europe shortly. Because of the importance of the subject, Roosevelt feels the government should support it in any way it can, and he asks Reid to do everything in his power to assist. He includes a list of the members of the committee.

General Charles Grosvenor predicts that no Republican candidate will stand against President Roosevelt in the upcoming election, and that for someone to do so would be political suicide. Despite some agitation in the South against the policy of the president toward African Americans, the vote in the South would be the same against any Republican candidate.
