Ores in Olympic Monument

Ores in Olympic Monument

A rich vein of ore has recently been discovered in the Olympic National Monument, leading to an effort to convert the area into a regular forest reserve, which would allow prospectors to mine the vein–something they are currently prohibited from doing. Theodore Roosevelt reserved the area while president, but President William H. Taft supports the effort to allow mining. The area in Canada nearest to Washington is home to some very productive mines.

Letter from George Shiras to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from George Shiras to Theodore Roosevelt

George Shiras makes reference to Theodore Roosevelt’s recent work in the Outlook and to Charles Sheldon’s new book, The Wilderness of the Upper Yukon. Shiras explains that he was not at the recent Boone and Crocket Club dinner because his mother is sick. He goes on to explain his publishing habits and mentions his work in National Geographic Magazine, Sportsmen’s Magazine, and Forest and Stream. Shiras addresses what he calls Roosevelt’s question of whether he will publish any “sportsman’s literature.” He says it is possible, but that he has been consumed with writing about the legal foundation for expanded federal powers, including federal health legislation, federal regulation of natural resources, and international trade and tariffs. Shiras encloses a chapter summary of his work in progress, Hunting Wild Game with Camera and Flashlight.

Dewey reviews these charges, as well as general information about Puget Sound and the measures already taken for its defense. The Board concludes that once presently-planned changes to the defenses of Puget Sound are completed, they will be sufficient with assistance from the Navy, but at present they are not sufficient.
