Human conservation and birth control

Human conservation and birth control

Margaret Sanger discusses birth control in terms of several issues including infant mortality, population growth through fertility and immigration, unemployment, charity, abortion, and sterilization. She presents a great number of statistics and research. Sanger also states that birth control is an important topic that is not discussed as it should be. When former President Roosevelt called the first White House Conference in 1912, he addressed these issues but did not discuss how birth control was a remedy to these problems. The two following White House Conferences in 1929 and 1930 did not discuss birth control either.

Well, here they are!

Well, here they are!

Cartoon shows a wedding party made up of a hefty President Hoover as the bride and a small shabby “Tax Payer” as the groom. With them are the bride’s family, including Mr. Dry (symbol of Prohibition) and two course and unattractive fat men, labeled “High Tariff” and “Handling of R.F.C. Loans.” Suggests that a vote for Hoover for reelection in 1932 means embracing a continuation of Prohibition, high tariffs, and questionable handouts by the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to American companies, as well.

Caption, lined through, at bottom of picture reads: “‘When you marry you do not merely marry your wife but her family as well.’ Col. Roosevelt from Manila.” The quote is attributed to Theodore Roosevelt Jr., then Governor General of the Philippines.

Speech – September 5, 1917 – Columbia County Fair

Typed draft with handwritten edits of Theodore Roosevelt’s speech at the Columbia County Fair. Roosevelt says that while America is a melting pot of many cultures, it is still a single country. He calls for all citizens to be united under one flag and one language. He condemns Germany’s actions during the war and says anyone that does not fully support the United States is a traitor. Americans have an obligation to be loyal to their country and to demand justice for all men regardless of social class. The country needs to be better prepared for war in the future.
