Hand, Learned, 1872-1961

Members of the Hungarian Republican Club gather at the Café Boulevard restaurant in honor of Theodore Roosevelt, and in support of Henry L. Stimson’s candidacy for governor of New York. Roosevelt sits near the head of the table, close to a portrait of himself festooned with patriotic banners and flags. A number of prominent Republican figures are also in attendance. An inset photograph at the bottom right shows the exterior of the Café Boulevard restaurant where the dinner was held.

Theodore Roosevelt was pleased by Judge Noyes’s letter, and he mentions that he has received similar letters from Judge Hand and Judge Amidon. Roosevelt wishes that he had Noyes’s letter in front of him when he wrote his article on the subject, because Noyes was particularly effective at conveying his position.

Frederick G. Fincke writes to President Roosevelt on hearing of an expected vacancy on the Second Circuit. Although he promised himself he would never write to Roosevelt about patronage, he submits the merits of Learned Hand for the position. Hand is Fincke’s son-in-law, and Fincke believes he is well suited to being appointed a judge.
