He will write if he hears anything about John Campbell Greenway. The Greenway name brought back memories of Greenleaf’s “pleasantest years” spent in Huntsville, Alabama.

Thomas Robins was delighted with Gutzon Borglum’s dissatisfaction over Calvin Coolidge’s inscription for the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. He suggests that Borglum meet with Andrew Fleming West, who has mastered “monumental English.” Robins also praises Borglum’s statue of John Campbell Greenway, which Robins feels was “worthy of the subject.”

Quentin Roosevelt thanks Robert Harry Munro Ferguson for the book. He has failed to write to Isabella Ferguson with his impressions of the West but he would like to return next year. Roosevelt might work for John Greenway next summer and has plans for another trip to the Southwest.

Colonel Roosevelt finally has a tent, secretary, and typewriter so he can work on his correspondence. He regrets that he is mostly writing to the families of dead and wounded men. The campaign has been rough with hard fighting but the regiment has performed well. The “cowpuncher” and university men have both been able to show their grit. Robert Harry Munro Ferguson has done well and was promoted to lieutenant. There were many unpleasant experiences but the charge up San Juan Hill “paid for it all many times over.”

Theodore Roosevelt cannot extend his trip and he might even cut it short in order to get back to Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt. He is looking forward to seeing Robert Harry Munro Ferguson and requests that Ferguson gather some friends in Silver City, New Mexico. They should arrive around noon on July 10.

Theodore Roosevelt will be unable to stay at Gilbert Christian Greenway’s home, or any private home, due to the potential for hurt feelings. Roosevelt looks forward to seeing Greenway and met with his son, John Campbell Greenway, two weeks ago.

Colonel Roosevelt describes the thankfulness of all the men at receiving the supplies from the Red Cross and he is grateful to Anna Roosevelt Cowles for helping to get those supplies to them. The regiment is now in a permanent camp with ample food, clothing, and care for everyone. He is extraordinarily proud of his group and the way they all work together. Roosevelt is in good health and hopes he can see William Sheffield Cowles sometime soon.

Governor Roosevelt is happy to hear that General Johnson’s health is improving, and confides to Johnson that New York Senator Thomas Collier Platt Platt and the Franchise Bill have been recent “trouble(s)” for him. Roosevelt also mentions a recent visit by businessman, John Campbell “Jack” Greenway to the Executive Mansion.
