Acting Secretary of State Adee asks Benjamin F. Barnes to show President Roosevelt the enclosed instruction. After consulting with Secretary of State Elihu Root, Adee decided to make the inquiry about Denmark a separate instruction. Root will explain why the mention of Greenland is deferred.

The SS Roosevelt as it left Oyster Bay, New York, for Commander Peary’s Arctic expedition. The edges of the postcard are decorated with illustrations of Arctic scenes. The description printed on the back of the postcard describes the ship landing at North Star Bay in Greenland after sailing through “thick fogs and heavy ice drifts.”

Postcard with black and white photograph of the Roosevelt, a ship built for Robert E. Peary’s 1905 and 1908 Arctic explorations, alongside a glacier near Cape York, Greenland, August 1906. The ship was named for Theodore Roosevelt, who had been very supportive of Peary’s expeditions.

Senator Lodge tells President Roosevelt about the establishment of a big German coaling station in St. Thomas, which indicates that German Emperor William II is “still hankering after those islands.” Lodge recommends quickly buying Greenland. In addition, Lodge recommends replacing Secretary of the Treasury Leslie M. Shaw, and disagrees with Shaw’s plan for issuing bonds. Lodge comments on various prominent events happening in the United States and the world and explains he is enjoying his time in “this old Italian town,” but is beginning to long for home. He wants to be near Roosevelt and not have to watch from a distance.
