The Daily News covers Grand Jury disclosures in the land fraud case of Charles H. Moyer, Big Bill Haywood and George A. Pettibone. The disclosures seem to indicate a connection to the late Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg, as well as an anonymous message that was sent to Moyer, Haywood, and Pettibone’s attorney. Significant support of Moyer, Haywood, and Pettibone was also noted in a series of speeches made at the Coliseum protesting their incarnation.

Henry Cabot Lodge discusses the upcoming elections. He thinks the Republican Party will carry the House, but worries about Massachusetts and New York. The Republican National Convention went “without a ripple” thanks to Winthrop Murray Crane, William H. Moody, and others. There are still bad feelings around Representative Charles Curtis, though. Ex-Governor John Lewis Bates, who took his unmerited defeat in “the most manly way,” gave one of the best speeches Lodge has ever heard. Lodge discusses District Attorney John B. Moran’s treatment of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. Moran, who is running for Governor of Massachusetts, supports William Jennings Bryan and William Randolph Hearst and his platform reads like a “manifesto of a Jacobian Club.”

Letter from William Henry Hunt to William H. Taft

Judge Hunt tells Secretary of War Taft the story of how he encouraged a grand jury to “inquire diligently into the instances of enclosures on public lands.” After indictments were delivered, a foreman of the court asked to be excused. The former foreman was indicted for fencing in land. Hunt commends the jury for their action and claims this is an “index of the healthier situation that exists in Montana.”
