Following a recent telegram he sent, President Roosevelt writes to his cousin, John Ellis Roosevelt, to express his sympathy for the recent death of Robert Barnwell Roosevelt–President Roosevelt’s uncle, and John Ellis Roosevelt’s father. Roosevelt wishes he could attend the funeral, but the circumstances at present in Congress will not allow him to leave Washington, D.C. He asks John to explain the matter to Robert B. Roosevelt, another cousin.

President Roosevelt informs Clara Louise Hay that he will notify the members of his cabinet that he hopes they will be able to serve as honorary pallbearers at the funeral of former Secretary of State John Hay. He plans to attend the funeral himself as well, and asks that Clarence L. Hay, the son of John and Clara Hay, let him know as soon as it is scheduled.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Hermann Speck von Sternburg

President Roosevelt received Ambassador Sternburg’s personal note about the death of King George of Saxony and was saddened to learn of his passing. Roosevelt expresses his “profound condolences” to the government of Saxony and his “heartfelt sympathy” to Sternburg who has served his entire active military career under King George. Roosevelt tells Sternburg that Henry Percival Dodge, Charge d’Affaires ad interim at Berlin, was instructed to attend the funeral as the U.S. representative and to express the country’s and Roosevelt’s “condolence and sorrow.”
