Ambassador Francis reports to President Roosevelt on the state of affairs in Austria and Hungary and the tensions between the Magyars and the German speaking Austrians. In Francis’s assessment, the Hungarians, or Magyars, are “impulsive, always restless and very patriotic” who would seek their independence from Austria immediately if they had enough popular support and sufficient funding.

Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria was touched to receive the gift of Roosevelt’s The Wilderness Hunter. He would have sent his thanks sooner, but he wanted to finish reading the book first, and now tells Roosevelt of his deep enjoyment of the book. Salvator tells Roosevelt about some of his recent travels, and his plans to make a study of Southern Albania that he hopes to send to Roosevelt.

Gaynor, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Henry Cabot Lodge, and William Loeb, his speech at the Battery, and the parade in his honor.
