President Roosevelt authorizes Principal Launcelot M. Blackford to permit the monitor to administer proper discipline to his son, Quentin Roosevelt, when he receives sufficient demerits to warrant it. Roosevelt asks that Blackford show this letter to Quentin as a warning and will allow Quentin to return to Washington when his “demerits are not excessive.”

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Robert Harry Munro Ferguson

President Roosevelt sends word to Robert Harry Munro Ferguson that he will be leaving public office in “a rather stormy fashion,” being attacked by both houses of Congress and by the press. James Bryce has remarked that bringing libel cases against the biggest two offenders in newspapers will be a service to the American public. Bryce and John Morley suggested Roosevelt make a statement about the British in India, which he plans to do presently. Some of Roosevelt’s English friends sent him a rifle for use on his African safari.

Launcelot Minor Blackford congratulates Lieutenant Greenway on his return from Cuba and on a “duty faithfully performed and distinction honorably won.” Blackford asks that Greenway write to him at home as soon as Greenway receives this letter and he hopes to see Greenway at Episcopal High School when circumstances allow.

Mary Goulding Hooff Fawcett has seen Ambler Mason Blackford’s article in The Outlook about Quentin Roosevelt during his time at Episcopal High School at Alexandria, Virginia, and adds to this account her own remembrance of Quentin. Fawcett reflects on the receiving photographs, letters, and kind words remembering her own son, Lieutenant Richard Hartshorne Fawcett, who also was killed while in the Air Service.
