Eisenhower, Dwight D. (Dwight David), 1890-1969

Robert C. Kimberly provides a detailed examination of the various afflictions and ailments that marked the life of Theodore Roosevelt from his childhood to his death in January 1919. He describes Roosevelt’s struggles with asthma and poor eyesight as a youth, his battle to control his weight, and details many of the injuries he suffered while living out the strenuous life. Kimberly delves into the serious leg injury Roosevelt suffered in a carriage accident in 1902, his decades long struggle with malaria, his near death experience on the River of Doubt expedition, and the treatment he received after the October 1912 assassination attempt. He notes the many doctors who treated Roosevelt as well as the implications his health problems had for his wife Edith.

John A. Gable examines the life and legacy of former Congressman Leonard W. Hall who served in a variety of capacities over many years in the Theodore Roosevelt Association. Gable looks at Hall’s upbringing, his long and varied public service as a member of the Republican party, and his involvement in civic affairs in Oyster Bay, Nassau County, and Long Island, New York. 

Pictures of Hall with his dog “Buffer,” with former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and at his seventy-eighth birthday party accompany the article.

Gable, Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association covers a variety of subjects in this installment of “Notes.” He sends birthday greetings to Alice Roosevelt Longworth on her ninety-fifth birthday and talks about her fame as a daughter of President Roosevelt and a hostess in Washington, D.C. He notes the anniversary of a Long Island bank with ties to Theodore Roosevelt, a PBS Christmas series with an episode on Roosevelt, and a running group in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, named in honor of Roosevelt. Gable discusses two scholarly articles published on Roosevelt: one on his connection to Yellowstone National Park and the other on his naval policies. He thanks the National Park Service for publishing Sagamore Hill, a pamphlet marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the site as a house museum, and closes by asking Theodore Roosevelt Association members to recruit new members to the group in 1979.

Reprint of an article originally published in the New York Herald Tribune which describes the dedication ceremonies at Sagamore Hill in June 1953 which featured an address by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The article names some of the prominent guests, quotes from Eisenhower’s brief speech, and describes some aspects of the ceremony such as the presentation of a flag and flag pole for the historic site by the Boy Scouts.

Article about a lecture given by author David McCullough in Oyster Bay, New York as part of a series of lectures to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the opening of Sagamore Hill as a historic site. McCullough spoke about Theodore Roosevelt and the Panama Canal. Gable quotes from various newspapers reporting her death, describes the funeral service, and lists the all male pallbearers. In addition to naming her siblings and her own children, he describes Ethel’s service in World War I as a nurse and her long years of service to the American Red Cross. Gable details her work with the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and her role in preserving Sagamore Hill National Historic Site.

Gable describes in detail the life and work of Hermann Hagedorn, historian, biographer, and long-time Director of the Roosevelt Memorial Association and its successor, the Theodore Roosevelt Association. Gable covers Hagedorn’s life as a child of German immigrants in Brooklyn, New York, his education and teaching at Harvard, and his early career as a writer and poet. He notes Hagedorn’s difficulties as a German-American during World War I and the start of his friendship with Theodore Roosevelt that would define his career. Gable traces Hagedorn’s leadership of the Roosevelt Memorial Association over nearly four decades, discusses his many publications on Roosevelt, and looks at his other writings, including a number of biographies and many works of poetry.
