Letter from Charles A. Reese to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Charles A. Reese to Theodore Roosevelt

Charles A. Reese believes that every man has a duty and privilege to do all he can to raise the standard of world citizenship without being compelled to wait for the right moment. A recent illness reminded him of this. He discusses previous, yet unsuccessful, attempts to promote educational opportunities. Recently, he became interested in establishing the “International Social Union” for teaching youth. The organization would be a forerunner to an international democracy. Reese asks Theodore Roosevelt to publish his letter in The Outlook and provide editorial commentary to raise interest and funds for the cause. He includes some verses about Missouri’s hospitality.

Letter from Lavina McNair to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Lavina McNair to Theodore Roosevelt

Lavina McNair asks if it would be possible to get pictures of Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt. She previously had some, but lost them in a house fire. She does not ask for help for herself in rebuilding, but opines that rich people should use their money to build churches and schools, and to help educate people. McNair does ask, however, if it would be possible to get a copy of Roosevelt’s book about his travels in Africa, as she likes to learn about interesting subjects.

Alfred Mosely would like Theodore Roosevelt to present a John Charles Dollman painting to the New York Board of Education on his behalf. The picture depicts the social inequality of Great Britain. Mosely believes this inequality is due to a lack of industrial education. Although the United States provides better education than Britain, he believes the Board can learn from the lessons depicted in the painting.

Letter from Maurice Francis Egan to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Maurice Francis Egan to Theodore Roosevelt

Maurice Francis Egan, Minister to Denmark, sends a copy of the Danish magazine Varden, which mentions President Roosevelt. Egan also sends a copy of a sonnet that he wrote which was published in Collier’s Weekly, and which a Danish magazine offered a prize for a translation. He believes that the recent financial and ministerial changes in Denmark, along with the fallout from a scandal involving Danish politician Peter Adler Alberti, have made the people more serious. Egan tells Roosevelt that he is pleased with the result of the election, which he followed largely through reports in French and English newspapers.
