Senator Lodge discusses legislation and other steps being taken regarding the Boston & Maine Railroad merger to prevent Edward Henry Harriman from gaining control of that railroad and consolidate it with his other holdings. Various other financiers would like to retain their stock in the Boston & Maine. In a handwritten postscript, Lodge says that he may not make it to the Republican National Convention in Chicago because his sister is dying.

Governor Guild of Massachusetts is recovering from rheumatic fever, and expects to be healthy again soon, but will not be well enough to join President Roosevelt for dinner on May 13, nor to attend the Conference of Governors. He will have to be represented there by experts appointed by Acting Governor Eben S. Draper.

Senator Lodge and President Roosevelt share similar opinions on the proposed Oklahoma constitution, with Lodge being particularly concerned about one provision which would “destroy representative government,” should it be allowed to pass. Lodge suggests that putting the constitution before Congress would be enough to change the provision. Lodge is thrilled by Governor Curtis Guild’s massive win in the recent Massachusetts gubernatorial election, but is concerned about how many votes the Independence Party candidate received.

Senator Lodge writes to President Roosevelt about a speech made by Eben S. Draper, Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts and owner of a business that manufactured textile processing machinery, that might have been misreported to Roosevelt. Lodge assures Roosevelt that Draper did not attack him in the speech and that the newspapers have mischaracterized it. He also lets Roosevelt know that there has been no change in the condition of his sister-in-law; the doctors have already given up on her but she is still “hanging on the edge”.

While Republicans won some key districts, Democrats, especially in states like New York, had a particularly strong showing that is disheartening and concerning.

Senator Lodge tells President Roosevelt that nothing more is expected of him regarding the bill. Representative Augustus Peabody Gardner is facing a particularly close race, especially with the mounting criticism he faces from Samuel Gompers, but he completely understands Roosevelt’s position. Organized labor is making for difficult races in New York and Massachusetts, and while Lodge believes that the Republican Party will succeed in carrying the House of Representatives, he is nervous about those two states.

Senator Lodge feels that President Roosevelt’s denunciations of demagogues and agitators are often subsumed by his denunciations of trusts, and urges Roosevelt to pay attention to both in the upcoming elections. The question is how to defeat them without making the public feel they are just as dangerous as the demagogues. As an example, Lodge mentions General Stephen Minot Weld, who is the kind of man they depend on for support and who they do not want to frighten into thinking, rightly or wrongly, that they are as extreme as the Hearsts and Morans are.

Senator Lodge writes to President Roosevelt about a serious situation developing in Massachusetts politics. At a recent state convention of the American Federation of Labor, the group denounced Lt. Governor Draper and nine of the eleven Republican Congressmen. Lodge believes that “Gus”, his son-in-law Augustus Peabody Gardner, “is a good fighter, but with this labor attack and the character of his opponent he has before him a very severe contest.” His opponent was a man named Schofield, a “Native-american demagogue with a great deal of local popularity.” Lodge spoke yesterday at the state convention in Rhode Island where a “Hearst man” is giving Republicans a tough fight as well.
