St. John Gaffney believing he is to be Minister to Portugal and asks William Loeb whether he ought to write to President Roosevelt about it. In a postscript, Travers encourages Loeb to read the New York Times article about Postmaster General Robert John Wynne.

Simpson recommends Whitridge based on his good social and cultural skills, his familiarity with Europe, and the ease with which he communicates and negotiates with others. Whitridge would “support the position with dignity” and already has contacts with Germans and Italians.

David L. Einstein asks Cornelius Newton Bliss to recommend career advancement for his son, Lewis Einstein, who is in the diplomatic corps. Bliss wrote a postscript on page 3 for George B. Cortelyou’s attention, encouraging action to oblige Einstein’s request.

Marion Crawford to the Constantinople legation because Crawford has a good understanding of customs and culture in the region and because he is a Roman Catholic. Baldwin discusses Crawford’s qualifications in detail, including mentioning his time in Turkey and India. Baldwin is acquainted with the other men suggested for this mission, but he does not believe they measure up to the same standard as Crawford does.

He has sent a book he wrote on Greek art to Platt. Parrish recently spoke with Elihu Root about his application, and Root advised him to write to the president and to the senators.

Archbishop Ireland suggests that John Watson Foster lead the mission to the Vatican to discuss Filipino matters. At the end of January, Ireland plans to take up the “Storer matter” with Senator Foraker. The Archbishop is pleased that the citizens of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota approve of President Roosevelt’s leadership.

President Roosevelt writes to Joseph Bucklin Bishop to say he stands behind the appointment of Whitelaw Reid as Ambassador to the United Kingdom. He also says Bishop was correct about Seth Low and the appointment for Postmaster.

President Roosevelt tells Secretary of State Hay that he cannot promise to be in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, over a year in advance because he does not know what the future holds. He also cannot meet with Hay after church on Sunday because he has to meet with some “railway people.” Finally, Roosevelt asks Hay’s advice about trying to send former U.S. Minister to Chile Henry Lane Wilson to Europe instead of back to Chile.
