Coxey'[s … patern]alism”

“Gen. Coxey” carries a sword labeled “Sensation” and leads a band of disgruntled citizens marching under the banner, “We Want $500,000,000 in Irredeemable Money! and Death to Interest on Bonds!” They are chasing soap bubbles and balloons labeled, “Don’t help yourself get the government to help you!, Paternalism, It is the duty of the government to furnish work to the unemployed, [and] The government must pay the freight!” William McKinley, holding a bowl labeled “McKinley’s Soft Soap Bubbles,” Benjamin Harrison, and Thomas B. Reed appear as spirits leading Coxey’s Army toward the edge of a cliff.

In the coming era of socialism

In the coming era of socialism

Police are breaking up a demonstration by capitalists who are turning the tables on the socialists by demanding their rights. Vignettes depict a capitalist rally in a “Fifth Avenue Dive”; Socialist thugs pressuring a priest for delivering sermons “dee-cidedly capitalistic”; A Socialist dismayed by a newspaper headline that states “Heinrich Equalrights, son of Socialist leader, joins capitalistic ranks”; and a poor showing for capitalists in the “Election Returns Bulletin.”

Comments and Context

Puck‘s occasional cartooning visitor, Harry Grant Dart, who drew mainly for the New York World and the Herald; and Life and Judge magazines into the 1920s, specialized in these busy genre-scenes. His work was always filled with details, impeccable perspective, and, often, “steampunk” or futuristic devices.

In this cartoon, Dart’s futuristic speculation is confined to the ideological — the humorous, logical, and frightening extensions of life in a Socialist America.
