Letter from Alfred L. Hutchinson to Theodore Roosevelt

Alfred L. Hutchinson sends Theodore Roosevelt a second copy of his book, The Limit of Wealth, to showcase the many things he said in his book that are now happening. Hutchinson handed a book to William H. Taft, and after becoming president, Taft enacted the corporation tax, which is something Hutchinson advocated for. Now Roosevelt is writing about the inheritance tax law, which is a step toward Hutchinson’s suggestion that there should be no limits on wealth, but that wealth should be redistributed after death.

President Roosevelt tells Anna Roosevelt Cowles how delightful it was to see her, although he is distressed that William Sheffield Cowles is “still suffering.” Roosevelt thought the editorials were “very nice.”

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Henry Cabot Lodge and Anna Cabot Mills Davis Lodge

Theodore Roosevelt writes to Henry Cabot Lodge and his wife, Nannie, in pencil, because he is far out in the African wilderness. Roosevelt discusses Lodge’s response to the tariff question and shares his own thoughts on the constitutional amendment about the income tax. Roosevelt agrees with William Loeb and Lodge on the mayoralty issue. On his trip, Roosevelt has gained a passion for William Shakespeare’s plays, news that will be of interest to Nannie. Roosevelt shares the highlights of his big game hunting in Africa, as well as other books he has been reading.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Bradley T. Johnson

Governor Roosevelt is happy to hear that General Johnson’s health is improving, and confides to Johnson that New York Senator Thomas Collier Platt Platt and the Franchise Bill have been recent “trouble(s)” for him. Roosevelt also mentions a recent visit by businessman, John Campbell “Jack” Greenway to the Executive Mansion.
