President Roosevelt relays to Senator Lodge that the objection to Judge William B. Sheppard is his successful handling of peonage cases. Roosevelt believes the charges against Sheppard by Horatio Bisbee are not serious, and occurred several years ago.

Letter from Henry Cabot Lodge to Theodore Roosevelt

Senator Lodge forwards President Roosevelt a statement from Walter P. Corbett, who recommends that Ezra P. Axtell be considered as a candidate to succeed Judge Charles Swayne. Lodge is impressed with Corbett but also discussed other candidates with Senator James Piper Taliaferro.
