Stuart, who has been appointed U.S. Marshal in the Virginia office, Roosevelt is to discuss West with Stuart, since West has been described as an “excellent man.”

President Roosevelt informs Secretary of State Root that Postmaster General George B. Cortelyou would like Louis A. Coolidge to be made comptroller of the currency. The current comptroller, William Barret Ridgely, would have to be put in the diplomatic service to free the space for Coolidge. The next two vacancies in the diplomatic service are spoken for, but Roosevelt would give Ridgely the third vacancy to open his place for Coolidge.

President Roosevelt asks Samuel N. Hinckley to call on George B. Cortelyou, chairman of the Republican National Committee, after August 1. Roosevelt also asks Hinckley to get in touch with Louis A. Coolidge, Director of the Literary Bureau of the Republican National Committee, who is a Harvard man assisting Cortelyou.
