Lyle A. McGeoch examines the state of relations between the United States and Great Britain when Lord Lansdowne served as Britain’s foreign secretary from November 1900 to December 1905. He highlights the negotiations concerning the Hay-Pauncefote treaty, the settlement of a boundary dispute between Canada and the United States, and a crisis stemming from Venezuela’s debt to Great Britain and Germany. McGeogh also looks at how Lansdowne struggled with the appointment of an ambassador to the United States, his difficulty at times in dealing with the personal style of diplomacy employed by President Theodore Roosevelt, and Lansdowne’s recognition of growing American power in the first decade of the twentieth century.

There will be demonstrations of how blind merchants work, how blind students are educated, and how the blind enjoy games and recreation. The exhibition shows the public what is being done to help the blind. A list of committee members is included.

Jefferson Seligman summarizes the recent meeting to consider the need for a salaried president of the New York chapter of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It was determined that Alfred Wagstaff, the current president, should stay on and receive a yearly honorarium. Seligman lists the Society’s current work and goals, which focus primarily on educational initiatives to promote animal welfare throughout the country.

It is reported that at a dinner with President Roosevelt, Ambassador to Italy George von Lengerke Meyer was told that his resignation is expected, in order for former New York City mayor Seth Low to take up the post. Meyer was made ambassador by William McKinley in 1900, with the understanding that he would resign after a year. Meyer has not resigned, much to the consternation of Secretary of State John Hay.

In this fragment of a letter, Senator Lodge writes to President Roosevelt about the selection of a man for Secretary of State. He considers Elihu Root and William H. Taft the best candidates, though he does not believe Taft can be spared from his service to Panama and the Philippines.

German Emperor William II has accepted David Jayne Hill, President Roosevelt’s nominee for the American Embassy in Berlin, thereby ending a recent embarrassing incident involving the posting. Part of the Emperor’s reservation in accepting Hill’s posting in Berlin was due to Hill being less wealthy than Charlemagne Tower, the outgoing American ambassador. The author of the article praises Hill’s qualifications, and agrees with Roosevelt’s insistence “that merit must go before millions,” but notes that in practice this can sometimes result in uncomfortable positions and suggests that states provide their ambassadors with ample means if they are not already independently wealthy in order that they are able to present themselves with the appropriate dignity and gravitas.

President Roosevelt wishes Senator Lodge luck with his trip and hopes he will be successful with his mission. Roosevelt impresses upon Lodge the necessity of success in coming to an agreement with England, as this is the last chance to do so by the “free act” of both parties.

Governor Roosevelt suggests that Anna Roosevelt Cowles host a dinner or breakfast with a given list of guests so that he can show the writer Frederic Harrison some attention. Roosevelt believes that Harrison will be in town from March 3 through March 5. As President McKinley is being inaugurated on March 4, Roosevelt states that date will not work.

Theodore Roosevelt asks his sister Anna if “darling Muffie” accepted his letter. He lists what he has been doing with his free time. Also since a large portion of his college career is over, he must figure out what he wants to do once he graduates.
