This book chronicles the relationship between John Goodall and Theodore Roosevelt. Goodall met Roosevelt in 1884 at the local Stock Men’s Association meeting. Later, Roosevelt worked for Goodall as a cowhand. When Roosevelt was president, he offered Goodall a position as Livestock Superintendent of Indian Agencies at Large.

Theodore Roosevelt tells his sister Anna that he is “bluer than indigo” about the loss of so many cattle on his North Dakota ranch over the winter. He is suffering a large financial loss and hopes to get out of the cattle business. He asks Anna to tell Nell (their brother Elliott) he sent him two goat heads.

Theodore Roosevelt thanks his sister Anna for the toys she sent for Bill Sewall’s child. The round-up is finished and he is nearly finished with his book, Thomas Hart Benton. He has been offered a position as a teacher and he feels sorry for “Lizzie.”

Theodore Roosevelt writes to his sister Anna of his arrival in North Dakota. He details the problems that have arisen due to the winter weather. The number of cattle lost due to the weather is “wholly trifling.” He feels he will get through all right if he can square his debt.

Theodore Roosevelt writes his sister Anna telling her that his trip has been delayed. He discusses how long he thinks he will be away and says he hopes to return before Christmas. He and Merrifield are headed out, and he describes what he is wearing and the scenery. He adds that New York Governor Grover Cleveland is no “angel.”

Theodore Roosevelt writes his sister Anna about happenings on his ranch. Everything has been going well with the cattle and he will be heading to the Bighorn Mountains in a few days. He was so glad to bring his two “backwoods babies” out with him, Bill Sewall and Will Dow. He thinks it will be a good many years before he gets back into politics.

Theodore Roosevelt writes his sister Anna telling her about the happenings at his ranch. The cattle are doing well and he has been doing a lot of hunting. He adds the interview that appeared in the St. Paul’s Dispatch was completely made up.
