Notable events include the deaths of Alice Lee Roosevelt and Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, Roosevelt’s time on his ranch, the completion of Sagamore Hill, Roosevelt’s engagement and marriage to Edith Kermit Carow, Theodore “Ted” Roosevelt’s birth, the “Great-Dieup” of cattle in North Dakota, and the founding of the Boone and Crockett Club.

Kermit Roosevelt has tried to answer the Winchester Repeating Arms Company’s question about the ammunition used on the Brazil expedition. Kermit checked with Anthony Fiala, but Fiala remembers only purchasing the rifle ammunition and that Theodore Roosevelt took care of the shotgun ammunition. Fiala will try to verify this information. Kermit suggests that the Winchester Company could also check with Frank Chapman or George Cherrie.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company

President Roosevelt sends the Mannlicher gun to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. He also sends a Fox double-barreled shotgun, and asks that both guns have cases and cleaning materials. He would like to know if the first shipment of cartridges has arrived in Mombasa. The Company should have a representative aboard the ship to turn the guns over to him in person and to show him where the cartridges have been stowed.

Theodore Roosevelt informs George von Lengerke Meyer that the cartridges from the Winchester company are set to arrive soon by boat. Roosevelt thanks Marian Alice Appleton Meyer for the letter to himself and Edith Roosevelt. Roosevelt would like to visit Meyer after his trip to Africa to discuss matters relating to Meyer’s appointment as Secretary of Navy and the importance of avoiding blunders on the international front.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company

President Roosevelt would like a Winchester gun that shoots the same ammunition as his Springfield, and requests more ammunition as well. Roosevelt says the guns should not be sent to Aden to be reshipped, but should be sent to London and thence to Mombasa. Kermit Roosevelt will carry one rifle with him, and Theodore Roosevelt will have another, the balance should be shipped with almost all of the ammunition far enough in advance to receive cable confirmation that they have arrived before Roosevelt himself does.

Letter from the Winchester Repeating Arms Company to Theodore Roosevelt

The Winchester Repeating Arms Company answers President Roosevelt’s questions about ammunition he will be taking to Africa and the shipment of goods from London to Mombasa. The Company also describes a hunt made by Ernest Solvay, the inventor of the Solvay sodium carbonate process. Solvay was successful hunting with a .32 Winchester Special Model ’94 rifle and a .405 caliber Model ’95 rifle.

The Winchester Repeating Arms Company would like to know how the cartridges should be packed during the journey to Africa. Usually they put 1,000 cartridges to a case. In this case, they can put a few of each kind of cartridge in a case and any quantity that President Roosevelt wants. The cases that are shipped to Mombasa will be tin-lined to prevent water damage.
