Wynn examines the status of “perhaps the rarest of all presidential publications,” the memorial tribute book for Alice Lee Roosevelt and Martha Bulloch Roosevelt written by Theodore Roosevelt after the women’s deaths in February 1884. Wynn notes the discovery and use of the rare copies of this work by Roosevelt biographers, and he highlights the five known copies by noting who donated or purchased them, and he lists the libraries or private collections where the copies are housed. “Under your own roof”: An important TR letter discovered

Gregory A. Wynn discusses the origins of his hobby of collecting items related to Theodore Roosevelt, and he uses this as an introduction to examine a letter from Theodore Roosevelt to George Otto Trevelyan which had not been previously known or published. Wynn highlights the sensitive nature of the letter’s contents as it reveals Roosevelt’s thoughts and actions during a number of diplomatic crises during his presidency. Wynn also notes how the Trevelyan letter was shared with and was part of Roosevelt’s correspondence with his friend David Gray. Wynn asserts that the letters provide a “revealing snapshot of presidential statecraft.”

A postcard and a dinner program from Wynn’s collection appear in the article along with a photograph of Roosevelt with Trevelyan and his son George Macaulay Trevelyan.

Obituary for William H. Harbaugh, best known for his 1961 biography of Theodore Roosevelt, Power and Responsibility: The Life and Times of Theodore Roosevelt. The obituary highlights Harbaugh’s service during World War II, his two biographies, and his teaching career at the University of Virginia. It also describes his work in preserving Pine Knot, Roosevelt’s rustic retreat in Virginia. A photograph of Harbaugh with Lawrence H. This edition of “News and Notes” details the annual police awards conferred by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in Dallas, New York City, and on Long Island, New York. It also reviews the results of the TRA Public Speaking Contests held in New York City and Long Island. The section updates readers on the status of Pine Knot, Theodore Roosevelt’s retreat in Virginia, and it promotes a two part documentary on Roosevelt to be aired on PBS in October 1996. “News and Notes” highlights the annual Fourth of July celebration in Oyster Bay, New York, and notes the retirement of Barbara Brandt from her post at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in Buffalo, New York.

The section also features an excerpt from a speech about Roosevelt given by Elihu Root in 1919, and it features four extracts from Roosevelt’s writings and addresses under the title of “TR Said…”. Six photographs appear in the section as does an illustration of Sagamore Hill done by architect Tuck Harvey.

The conferring of the annual Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) police awards for New York City, Boston, and Western New York state opens this edition of the “News and Notes” section. The accomplishments of each of the winners are detailed as are the ceremonies marking each award. A report on the TRA’s annual meeting and dinner follows with details of its speakers, field trips, and annual elections. The conferring of the TRA’s Junior Officer Leadership Award for a member of the crew of the USS Theodore Roosevelt is highlighted, and the section reprints an address by Edith Derby Williams given at the annual meeting.

Other news from the section includes the marking of twenty years as Executive Director of the TRA by John A. Gable; the awarding of the annual natural history research grants by the American Museum of Natural History; and the passing of TRA Trustee Oren Root. New York Governor George E. Pataki’s admiration for Theodore Roosevelt is noted as are the accomplishments of Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. and his son, Quentin, on the fiftieth anniversary of the invasion of Normandy in World War II. “News and Notes” also trumpets recent works on Theodore Roosevelt by Caleb Carr, H. Paul Jeffers, and Joseph R. Ornig.
