New York Superintendent of Public Works Stevens attempts to explain a misunderstanding that has arisen over his having urged that President Roosevelt quickly name a replacement for former Collector of Internal Revenue at Rochester, Archie Dovell Sanders. Sanders’s resignation had been requested several days before Stevens wrote, and it was not therefore Sanders’s removal that Stevens was seeking but the filling of his place. Stevens regrets if he caused Roosevelt any embarrassment.

New York Governor Benjamin B. Odell has revived speculation that he will remove George Hilliard from his position as special deputy commissioner for the New York City Department of Excise. Hilliard supports Senator Thomas Collier Platt. The newspaper reports that the rise of a Republican party insurgency is possible, and that if Platt loses a supporter, President Roosevelt will not have a solid delegation in the state.

Attorney General Knox defends the integrity of C. A. S. Frost, who he appointed as assistant to Francis J. Heney, chief prosecutor of the Oregon Land Fraud trials. In 1901, Frost had been convicted of involvement in a conspiracy.
