Letter from Charles John Augustus Holmgren to Theodore Roosevelt

Charles John Augustus Holmgren thanks Theodore Roosevelt for his response to his letter, but now appeals to Roosevelt for assistance in finding a society for social betterment or legal adviser to aid him. Holmgren seeks to withdraw funds and begin again in a new vocation, owing in part due to libelous charges against him and his work.

Exhibit D: concern regarding “Stories of Long Ago in the Philippines”

The exhibit contains transcriptions of two letters. The first, dated March 5, 1906, is from the Secretary of Public Instruction, General James Francis Smith, to the Director of Education, David P. Barrows. Smith objects to two parts of a book, entitled Stories of Long Ago in the Philippines, written by Hugh Odell McGovney, a former instructor at the Insular Normal School. Smith states that these two sections should be eliminated or the book should be suppressed. In the second letter, dated March 7, 1906, Barrows responds that Mr. Hodgson will be happy with Smith’s opinion. Barrows requests permission to send Smith’s letter to Hodgson.
