Attorney General Bonaparte updates President Roosevelt on various matters before the Department of Justice, specifically pertaining to the cases of William Edgar Borah and N. M. Ruick. Bonaparte also goes into great detail about the case of the People of Puerto Rico vs. the Roman Catholic Apostolic Church in Puerto Rico. He encourages Roosevelt not to get involved but instead to let the courts work it out. In a postscript, Bonaparte discusses the political considerations of federal appointees who run for elective office.

Theodore Roosevelt was pleased by Father Curran’s letter and greatly appreciates his friendship. If he had been president, Roosevelt would have sent Father Vattmann to investigate the Mexico situation and acted upon his report. He was interested to hear from Archbishop Blenk that the general opinion was changing in support of his actions during the “Vatican incident.”

Letter from William Henry Hunt to Theodore Roosevelt

The conditions in Puerto Rico are generally satisfactory and Governor Hunt recently delivered a speech to several thousand “respectful and well behaved” people. Bishop Blenk made a mistake by opposing a public school system which has created considerable excitement. Hunt fears that there will be far reaching consequences to Blenk’s misstep.
