Jusserand thanks Roosevelt for his sympathy at the loss of her mother, Lucy Ellen Kelleran Richards, and is thankful for the friendship of Roosevelt and his wife, Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt. The Roosevelts’ friendship made Washington, D.C., feel like home to the Jusserands.

Hamilton Wright Mabie informs President Roosevelt of a plan to surprise Lyman Abbott for his upcoming seventieth birthday with an privately printed extra edition of The Outlook. Mabie asks Roosevelt to write five or six lines of congratulations for the edition.

John Proctor Clarke wishes President Roosevelt a happy birthday and reflects on their history together. Roosevelt “changed the whole course and current of [Clarke’s] life” when, as governor of New York, he appointed Clarke as Deputy Attorney General to investigate the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company. A year later, “Fate took a hand” (with the death of H. R. Beekman) and Roosevelt appointed Clarke to a 14-year term as Justice of the Supreme Court of New York. As for Roosevelt, the passing years have made him “the foremost man in all the world,” yet he is still “the same simple honest affectionate friend.”
