Theodore Roosevelt introduces Richard Achilles Ballinger to William Beebe, curator of ornithology at the New York Zoological Park. Roosevelt praises Beebe’s work in collecting American birds and supports his request to collect migratory birds near lighthouses for the park’s collection. He urges Ballinger to grant permission and facilitate communication with the appropriate bureau.

Theodore Roosevelt writes to Dr. Charles D. Walcott about Congress’ refusal to appropriate the necessary monies for mounting of the larger animals and birds. He mentions that Mrs. Kennedy has written to him “in anything but an enthusiastic frame of mind” and will be sure to put anyone with an interest in natural or botanical works in touch with Walcott.

President Roosevelt informs ornithologist Waldron DeWitt Miller that he shot a Dominican or yellow-throated warbler at Oyster Bay, New York. He offers to send the bird’s skin to Miller.

Paul Russell Cutright examines the donation of Theodore Roosevelt’s bird collection to the Smithsonian Institution and the American Museum of Natural History. Cutright focuses on the donation to the Smithsonian since it was very large, 622 bird skins, and he details how the collection was cataloged, where and to whom individual specimens were dispersed, and he highlights some of the more notable specimens like the Snowy owl.

Pictures of Theodore Roosevelt and his father and a copy of two pages of the accession records of the Smithsonian accompany the article. The cover of this issue features a picture of the Snowy owl shot, prepared, and donated to the American Museum of Natural History by Roosevelt.
