Letter from Thomas Henry Carter to Theodore Roosevelt

Thomas Henry Carter was surprised to learn of Archibald Stevenson’s objection to the appointment of Mrs. Ernest as “lady commissioner.” Mrs. Ernest had the support of leading citizens, including the Denver postmaster, whom Carter presumed to represent Stevenson. Carter will meet with Stevenson to resolve the matter. The Exposition Company is forming a commission to visit the capitals of Europe, and Carter asks if President Roosevelt has any friends that are well equipped for such work and would enjoy a trip abroad.

Telephone message from Howard Pyle

Howard Pyle understands President Roosevelt’s objections to his paper and will make the necessary changes. Pyle did not intend to criticize Roosevelt but wanted to state his own reasons for supporting Roosevelt’s policy. He is willing to discuss the matter with Roosevelt.

Federal officers opposed Yates

Article discussing Illinois politics, particularly opposition to the renomination of Governor Yates. Opposition is lining up behind the candidacy of Frank O. Lowden and it appears that Lowden has tacit approval from President Roosevelt as Illinois postmasters have sided with Lowden.

Letter from F. Norton Goddard to Theodore Roosevelt

F. Norton Goddard believes that he is being mistreated by Robert C. Morris and hopes that President Roosevelt can express his dissatisfaction with the situation to Morris. He also believes that Henry W. Taft’s letter to William Henkel was improper. Goddard offers several suggestions regarding New York appointments that he believes will strengthen his political position.

Alliance with George B. Cox designed for offensive and defensive work

Senator Hanna’s protest against the appointment of Judge Wright as judge of the District of Columbia indicates that Hanna’s alliance with George Barnsdale Cox is both offensive and defensive. Hanna will likely leave the Republican National Committee and focus on Ohio politics. The Hanna-Cox alliance will be a force in the realignment of Republican politics in Ohio.

Charles S. Gleed denies disparaging William Allen White. He considers White to be a friend. However, White is supporting Cyrus Leland and opposing Richard C. Kerens based on the opinions of his friends and not personal acquaintance. Gleed knows that Leland will conduct his office well and without scandal.

Letter from William Allen White to Theodore Roosevelt

William Allen White took the title for The Triumph’s Evidence from Robert Browning’s poem Abt Vogler. White found it humorous that many in Kansas thought he was going to be the “Mark Hanna in the White House.” This notion has now been dispelled.
