President Roosevelt directly in front of boulder marking the site of the historic Lincoln and Douglas debate

Postcard featuring a photograph of Theodore Roosevelt visiting the site of the Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas debate on August 27, 1858. Roosevelt dedicated this spot on June 3, 1903. A group of people are watching from around the site, and a decorated stand is behind the dedication boulder. A handwritten note is included on the front of the postcard.

A portrait of George Washington with Roosevelt’s face is in the upper left corner and is surrounded by a big stick border. Roosevelt and Washington are cited as the fathers of the country. Various disjointed notes are written on the reverse.

Comments and Context

The postcard makes reference to the commonly attributed tale of George Washington chopping down a cherry tree.

Comments and Context

Theodore Roosevelt was in Denver, Colorado to review a parade given in his honor. Roosevelt gave speeches for the Colorado Livestock Association, the state legislature, and veterans of the Spanish-American War during this visit. He was endorsed by Mayor Speer and Governor Shafroth, both of whom were Democrats. More information about Roosevelt’s trip west in 1910 can be found in the Theodore Roosevelt Association Chronology January 1909 to December 1912 by Robert J. Moore.

Postcard featuring the statement, “I Suppose if I Vote for Roosevelt I Can Stick Around on My Job”. The word Roosevelt is in a large red and green pennant flag on the left side of the postcard and a cartoon drawing of a police officer is on the right. On the reverse is a handwritten note to Henry Losier that states “Solid ‘Bull Moose’ Here. Get Busy Henry!”.

Comments and Context

The postcard was most likely produced in 1912 during the presidential campaign in which Theodore Roosevelt would run as a member of the Progressive Party, also known as the Bull Moose Party. Roosevelt would lose the election to Woodrow Wilson.
