Winchester Repeating Arms Company
English
President Roosevelt thanks the employees of the Winchester Repeating Arms company for all their work outfitting him for his safari. He believes any issues with his equipment will result from his own error, and plans to share his experiences with the company, so long as he does not already address them in his column with Scribner’s.

President Roosevelt asks Winchester Repeating Arms Company to oil his guns and weapons and hermetically seal them in cases. Roosevelt lists the rifles he wants placed in his own cabin on the ship and asks if they will at the same time put the ammunition on the ship.

President Roosevelt notifies the Winchester Repeating Arms Company that he will not be bringing his 45.70 Winchester on his safari. Roosevelt asks that his ammunition order be altered to prioritize bullets for the government rifle and his .405 Winchester, and inquires whether the company has received the bullets they will send to Mombasa.

President Roosevelt has just spoken with Billy Hofer, who suggested that the Winchester Repeating Arms Company may have shipped hollow-point bullets for Roosevelt to use during his safari. Roosevelt does not remember ordering hollow-point bullets, and would like to receive a full accounting of this claim. Roosevelt also asks the Winchester Repeating Arms Company to make a duplicate of his present .405 rifle. He inquires of the possibility of sending materials to Khartoum rather than Mombasa, and asks to be notified when the current shipment reaches Mombasa.

President Roosevelt is very pleased by the .405 rifles that the Winchester Repeating Arms Company sent him, and would like to order a third rifle of the same type as a backup to bring on his safari. Roosevelt also asks how long it would take to get extra cartridges, should he need them, and wonders if the cartridges that have already been sent have reached Mombasa yet.

President Roosevelt confirms receipt of rifles from the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. He thinks, however, that the rifles may shoot a bit high, and suggests that this could be fixed by adjusting the rear sight. Roosevelt will try the rifles again before any changes are made, and in the meantime orders several boxes of ammunition.

President Roosevelt spoke last night with Gerrit Forbes and Theodore Lyman, two men who have hunted big game in Africa. Both took the .405 Winchester and reported problems with it jamming. Roosevelt asks the Winchester Repeating Arms Company to be extremely careful with his and Kermit’s rifles, and to run a lot of shells through them to be sure they do not jam.

President Roosevelt sends his 45-50 rifle to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. It has the perfect trigger pull, although the stock is too short. Roosevelt would like the three rifles being made for him to have the same weight trigger as the one he is sending and the same stock as a rifle they already have. He asks that the rifle be sent back as soon as possible.

President Roosevelt has directed A. H. Fox to send the Winchester Repeating Arms Company the necessary shells to be packed with his gun. Fox suggests that they substitute brass shells for paper shells and that the Winchester Repeating Arms Company should assume that Roosevelt is fine with this change unless they hear from him otherwise.

Theodore Roosevelt notifies the Winchester Repeating Arms Company that he has requested that General William Crozier send the rifles with the silencers as soon as possible. He also mentions that if the representative of the company needs a pass to get on board the ship to deliver the guns and ammunition this letter will serve as such.

George Kruck Cherrie does not remember that any 12 gauge shells were supplied to Theodore Roosevelt on the Brazil expedition and he does not think that Roosevelt used a shotgun on the trip. Leo E. Miller and Cherrie used shotguns, but they used 16 gauge guns.

President Roosevelt wishes to confirm all the ammunition he ordered will be in Mombasa when he arrives. He is okay with having the guns packed separately or together. He would like one of the 405s and the Springfield put in cases with a mark so he can take them out of their case as soon as he lands in Mombasa.
