Charles E. Hunter, the Oklahoma Republican Central Committee chairman, explains the state’s “very hard campaign” to Arthur I. Vorys. Hunter’s committee believes they can elect part of the state ticket and possibly the legislature. However, “to win this fight it takes money,” more than the committee can raise. Hunter inquires if Vorys would petition the Republican National Committee to furnish funds to conduct the campaign.

George C. Pardee, former Governor of California, warns that Secretary of War William H. Taft should not trust Edward Henry Harriman when he says he supports Taft’s nomination. Harriman and the Southern Pacific Railroad Company’s Political Bureau consider Taft too similar to President Roosevelt and, in the likely case they are involved with the California delegation to the Republican National Convention, would break from supporting him if the opportunity presents itself.

In a draft letter with handwritten corrections, Secretary of War Taft details the reasons why he will not accept a compromise vote in the Ohio state Republican Central Committee to endorse him for president and Senator Joseph Benson Foraker for senator in the upcoming election. Taft tells Arthur I. Vorys that Foraker stands against President Roosevelt’s policies, and he cannot support that under any condition.
