In a letter translated by Anna Knight, Hans von Röller introduces himself as a man devoted to the “pursuit of knowledge.” He explains that he was recently in Africa to study Arabic and had hoped to of join an expedition with Sven Hedin, but unfortunately there was no place for him. Röller asks Theodore Roosevelt to recommend a field for him to apply his knowledge.
