Donald Livingston informs Theodore Roosevelt of the political situation in South Dakota, as Livingston sees it. President William H. Taft is disliked and many are indifferent to Senator Robert M. La Follette, though Livingston believes he is too radical. He writes that thousands hope Roosevelt will be nominated and that their lives will be restored. Livingston also believes a new Senator could enter the race if Roosevelt was the presidential candidate.
Comments and Context
William Lorimer was elected in 1909 by the Illinois State Senate to fill a vacant seat in the United States Senate. It was later revealed that he had paid members of the State Senate to be elected. An investigation began in the United States Senate, taking place between 1910 and 1912, and Senator Robert J. Gamble was one of the senators who voted that Lorimer should be allowed to keep his position.
