Comments and Context
Josephine B. Bowman was one of the first twenty female Navy nurses in a group otherwise known as the “Sacred Twenty” of the Navy Nurse Corps. The Corps was established on May 13, 1908 via the Naval Appropriations Bill, signed by Theodore Roosevelt. Bowman would serve as the third Superintendent from December 1, 1922 to January 1, 1935. During her tenure, she lobbied for better pay, benefits, and equal military status for women in the Corps, although this would not be achieved until 1944.
