Comments and Context

Lenah H. Sutcliffe Higbee was one of the first twenty female Navy nurses in a group otherwise known as the “Sacred Twenty” of the Navy Nurse Corps. The Corps was established on May 13, 1908 via the Naval Appropriations Bill, signed by Theodore Roosevelt. Higbee would serve as the second Superintendent from January 20, 1911 to November 30, 1922. During her tenure, she led the Navy Nurse Corps through World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic, as well as oversaw a drastic increase in nurses in the Corps during this time. She was the first female Navy veteran to win the Navy Cross non-posthumously and was the first female Navy veteran to have a ship named after her– the USS Higbee— in 1945.
