In Charles C. Myers’s own words, “Paris is noted for having the finest driveways and boulevards in the world. Here is a picture taken from a balloon and showing the streets of the city and how they radiate from the Triumphal Arch as a center.”

Myers notes the photograph was taken from the roof of the Hotel Cecilia, but the view from the top of the Arc de Triomphe gives an excellent view of the city center. Myers comments on the history and construction of the arch.

Comments and Context

In Charles C. Myers’s own words, “Here is a closer view of the great triumphal arch which is the largest in the world and was built by Napoleon in memory of his many victories and battles of 1805-6, being completed by Louis Philip in 1836. This vast arch is 96 ft high and 48 ft wide, being intersected by a lower transversal arch 61 ft high and 27 ft wide. The whole structure being 164 ft high and 148 ft wide and 72 ft deep. The huge pillars of masonry on which this arch rests are adorned with scenes of battle and also many names of Napoleons Officers. Thru the gates of this arch marched the victorious German Army in 1871.”

Postcard showing the Eiffel Tower with the Seine River in the foreground and the Grande Roue de Paris in the background. Charles C. Myers describes the visitor attractions located on the various platforms in the Eiffel Tower. Because of the height of the structure, Myers believes one can get the best view of the surrounding areas just before sunset. Myers notes admission to the Eiffel Tower is one franc or twenty cents.

Comments and Context

In Charles C. Myers’s own words, “This shows the massive structure of Eiffel Tower, standing on the east bank of the Sein [sic] River. It was built in 1887-89 and is the loftiest structure in the whole world, an even thousand feet from the ground to the top of the flagstaff. From the top of this tower you can get an excellent view of the city and surrounding country for a radius of 45 miles. Visitors may go up on the elevator and get off at the first landing 190ft in the air where there is a platform 223 ft square. Here there is a summer garden, all kinds of amusements and refreshment stands and a post office station. You may then go up to the next landing which is 380ft from the earth and a good observation point, or to the next one which is 680 ft above the grass. The last platform is 905 ft from the earth and here there is a glass pavillion [sic] 54 ft square with seating capacity for 800 people where entertainments and concerts are often held. There is also situated here one of the most powerful wireless telegraph sets in the whole world. An admission of one franc is charged visitors who ascend the tower. One franc in french money equals 20¢ u.s. [sic] money.
